Are you wondering if there really is an alternative to the 9-5? I was. I NEEDED an alternative. You see, a few years ago, as my son was entering 1st grade, we quickly realized that traditional school wasn’t going to work. With a toddler in tow, my husband and I both worked full time out of the house, we lived in one of the best neighborhoods in Southern California and our son was going to one of the best elementary schools. But (there’s always a ‘but’ right?), we were stressed out, making ends meet but not paying down debt and our kids were getting the last bits of energy and time we had instead of our best. Our breaking point came when our son started showing physical signs of anxiety and we decided we needed another option. We made the decision to homeschool whichc meant that I wouldn’t be able to work out of the house anymore. We started thinking out of the box. We chose to have an optimistic (translate: desperate) mindset and DECIDE what we wanted our life to look like.
We started dreaming. We wrote our dreams down: for Andrew to work from home, me to have the CHOICE to work from home if I wanted to and the CHOICE to homeschool our kids. I started reading books like Think and Grow Rich: The Original, an Official Publication of The Napoleon Hill Foundation and The Success Principles: How to Get From Where You Are to Where You Want to Be and started changing my mindset on what was possible.
Fast forward 3 years and now…
- We live in Austin, TX.
- My husband, Andrew, works from home.
- Our lifestyle is less stressful and more fulfilling than it has been in years.
- I get to homeschool our kids (now 9 and 4).
- I get to work from home, around my family’s schedule.
We are still a work in progress and life is not perfect but we opened space in our lives, we lessened the stress and we are living with intention.
Having time flexibility and an extra stream of income has provided that cushion we needed, a little extra breathing room and some fun new friendships for me personally. We’re able to start paying down our debt and grabbing hold of our dreams. I’m incredibly grateful that my husband is around to see our kids and spend more time with our family because of his short commute down the hall! I get to take my kiddos on field trips any day of the week and spend as much time as we want in nature and with friends. I am incredibly grateful for the flexible schedule to enjoy my family in this way.
If you are feeling stuck and wondering if there is another way, I can definitely tell you that YES there is another way, but you have to step out of your comfort zone and be willing to try something new.
